The Duwamish Valley Sustainability Association is in the middle of installing and commissioning a biodigester (Phase 4) installed at Food Lifeline, for which the inauguration was on October 11th.

In order for this project to be economically sustainable over time, it must be scaled up in capacity in order to be able to produce biogas. To do this, they are currently in Phase 5, where they are working with professionals from the University of Washington, Seattle Park Foundation and Eco-Northwest to evaluate the economic and social impact that biogas production entails. The first community meeting was on November 14th, and DVSA, which invited community members to select what the priorities would be in the use of products from the biodigester.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION SERIES

Are you interested in or have been thinking about tool lending libraries, repair and mending shops and education, local composting and urban farming, free swap and trade shops, cooperatively owned businesses, green job training, community solar, the creative reuse of material, or anything like this? These are some examples, among many more, of local resource and knowledge sharing that are essential to circular, regenerative, and solidarity economies.

The Just Circular Communities Collaborative (JC3) is hosting a series of three monthly “Community Conversations” at the Duwamish River Community Hub that center on these topics and we would love to hear from you.

The Community Conversation Series is intended to facilitate a space to learn, build, and empower a community of individuals, organizations, and local businesses that are interested in advancing a Just Transition in the Duwamish Valley through community-initiated and led circular economy projects. We believe that circular practices can be a tool to address systemic challenges facing frontline communities and work towards clean, healthy, and decarbonized futures.

Tues. May 7th: Who are the individuals, organizations, and businesses working in this space? What’s your mission/vision? What regenerative economy and/or Just Transition projects are you planning or aspiring to plan to address local challenges? What are your challenges to achieve your plans?

Sat. June 1st: How can we bridge the gaps, find overlaps, and support synergies between different organizations and projects?

Sat. June 29th: What resources and support do you need to move your initiatives forward?

*Modest stipends will be provided for community-based organizations, details to come. Dinner will be provided on May 7th and light snacks/refreshments provided on June 1st and 29th.

*The first session is prioritized for community-based organizations, businesses, and individuals, while the second and third sessions include municipal partners.
